In the old vernacular, a pond and a dam were synonymous. Palmer's Dam was located on Ridley Creek just north of Baltimore Pike, upstream of the Media Water Works. Copy of original photo; source not noted
This view, of the Fairmount Dam and Water Works and the Callowhill St. Bridge, was taken from a boathouse ramp above the dam on the Schuylkill River. Two steamboats are moored above dam, and the roof of a bathing pavilion is visible below dam. Sewer construction is also underway along the Esplanade below the Water Works.
View looking south from bridge showing Water Works, covered bridge at Baltimore Pike and view up the Ridley Creek valley. A trolley line crosses the creek in front of the covered bridge.
Frank Lees caption: "This is Palmer's Mill, alongside Palmers Dam on the Crum Creek. Looking carefully you can see a fisherman sitting on the bank. Also you can see the spillway for the race which ran the huge water wheels in the mill. This mill was purchased by T. Chalkley Palmer in 1834, and he operated a grist mill, a sawmill, and a smith shop here. This is completely covered by water of the Springton Reservoir." See also P-08040 and P-08009.
