This is Zimmerman's copy of an old photograph, which is not dated but could be ca. 1870. The school appears on the 1855 Map of Media, and predated the formation of the borough in 1850. According to Keith Lockhart (delawarecountyhistory.com) it was built about 1840 and known as the Upper School in Nether Providence Township.
"Red Ink" photo, series by same photographer named for red ink used for writing descriptions on reverse side of similarly-mounted images. Looking south on Manchester Avenue from about Baltimore Avenue. The East Media School is in the right background. A heavy snowfall covers the road.
Card includes photographs of Media Presbyterian Church, Borough Hall, Media High School, and R.M.S. Media, a British steamship. Dr. Walter Engard Wentz Jr. married Elizabeth Hoopes Mackey on September 24, 1932 (See Chester Times, Sept. 26, 1932). She was born ca. 1909, and is probably the Baby Macky shown in Appleton photographs AP-5903 and AP-5904. For the grown-up Mrs. Wentz, see also P-12013.
This was the last time the MHS band marched down state street. Shortly after, the high school was closed, with the students transferred to the new Penncrest High School in Middletown Township. This photograph is probably a print made from a slide, probably taken by David Jefferis.
